The third national conference on preventing digital addiction is behind us! Several guests and lecturers joined us in the Rog Center hall. The conference's main theme was finding balance in a world where digital technology is rapidly changing and developing, presenting us with new challenges all the time. Through the perspectives of top speakers, we wanted to highlight various protective factors that help us navigate the waves of technological change.
Presentation of the activities of Centre Logout in the period 2021-2025
Since it has been four years since our last conference, we presented the trends in this field at the beginning. The Logout center is also following the changes in the digital world. Rok and Živa, counsellors at Logout, presented the activities and the most important achievements of Centre Logout over the past 4 years.
Recommendations for screen use in young athletes, created at the initiative of the MOL Department of Sport
On the day of the conference, the Recommendations for the use of screens in young athletes were released, and we are extremely proud of them. They were created in collaboration between Centre for Digital Wellbeing Logout, the City Municipality of Ljubljana, and the Slovenian Psychologists' Association – Sports Psychology Section. Our counsellor Tilen Hočevar, one of the co-authors of the recommendations, presented them at the conference.
Psychological preparation and risks in e-sports
Then we listened to Nuša Klepec, a master of psychology and former Logout counselor. She joined us virtually from sunny Madrid, where she currently lives and works with the e-sports team Movistar KOI Fénix. Firsthand, she introduced us to the world of professional e-athletes. She emphasized that this is an extremely competitive field, where only those who regularly train with the intention and goal of improving their game can succeed. She also emphasized that professional gamers have a higher prevalence of developing video game addiction than the rest of the population.
Legal challenges of using technology for children, parents, and schools
Since young people spend a lot of time in front of screens today, they are also more vulnerable to various forms of cyberbullying. Parents and professionals who work with young people often find themselves in a difficult situation when they want to help them. Therefore, we invited doc. dr. Benjamin Lesjak to the conference, where he presented the key legal challenges in the use of technology and explained the frameworks that need to be considered.
Roundtable discussion: "Between connectedness and overload: Finding balance on the waves of technological change"
Following the lunch break, a round table discussion took place, where Nik Škrlec - actor and influencer, Martina Peštaj - media psychologist and mother, Klemen Selakovič - publicist, graphic designer, and author of the AIDEA podcast, Bojan Cvjetićanin - frontman and author of songs and lyrics for the Joker Out band, and our counsellors Rok Gumzej and Živa Ahac discussed finding solutions to digital overload.
The round table guests agreed that we sometimes forget that problematic use is just a sign that our life is out of balance. It is almost a rule that the problem lies elsewhere and is only expressed through pointless scrolling, gaming, and the like. We have a difficult task ahead of us to think and check which area we might be paying too little attention or effort to. We are responsible for balancing our own lives, but support from loved ones can make the process easier and faster.
Focus or screen?
Following this, we were enchanted on stage by Nik Škrlec, who reminded us with his memory tricks that we don't necessarily need a PowerPoint presentation to maintain audience attention. In addition, he gave us an insight into memorization techniques as a starting point for understanding the broader significance of focus in learning and everyday life.
10 studies on the use of digital technologies in preschool children
If you thought that digital dilemmas for children begin with the first phone – think again. Digital education begins in kindergarten. Mark Žmavc, Logout's researcher and counsellor, presented 10 studies on the use of digital technologies by preschool children.
Sleep as a basic protective factor for children and adolescents
We concluded the conference with a lecture by dr. Barbara Gnidovec Stražišar, a specialist in pediatric neurology and pediatrics and a European expert in sleep medicine. She emphasized that when we talk about sleeping an average of 8 hours a night, we are following the lower limit, which is at best satisfactory. The lecture made the audience think that we might be overlooking the impact of sleep on mental health.
We sincerely thank all the lecturers, guests, conference participants, and our supporters and co-financiers, without whom this conference would not have been possible.
Logota's team is already looking forward to the next conference, and in the meantime, we wish you a pleasant navigation on the waves of digital change.
